Renowned architecture firm Zaha Hadid has unveiled designs for a cultural complex in China. Situated in the heart of Changsha, the ‘Changsha Meixihu International Culture & Art Center’ will be made up of three buildings—the Contemporary Art Museum, a Grand Theater, and a Multipurpose Hall—and offers other facilities. The place for theatre and art would be designed in the modern style of the architects, with unique and eye-catching sinuous curves. Once it’s complete, the Changsha Meixihu International Culture & Art Center can house a total of over 2,300 seats at its performance venues, and will also contain bars, lobbies, restaurants and the likes throughout the
On the site of a former industrial warehouse, Andrea Maffei Architects (along with Arata Isozaki) have realized a new public library filled with light and bound by an undulating curtain wall. Before construction ever began, Maffei and Isozaki beat out 150 other teams for the opportunity to realize a new library for the city of Maranello, Italy. In their solution, a solid wall surrounds the perimeter of the site, and the plan looks not unlike someone has drawn a cloud or amoeba in a box. The library, itself, has a bright interior bound by curving glass walls. Between this glass wall and the solid site wall, a shallow
Edgeland House is located on a rehabilitated brownfield site and is a modern re‐interpretation of one of the oldest housing typologies in North America, the Native American Pit House. The Pit House, typically sunken, takes advantage of the earth’s mass to maintain thermal comfort throughout the year. Like this timeless dwelling, Edgeland House’s relationship to the landscape both in terms of approach as well as building performance involves an insulative green roof and a 7‐foot excavation‐ gaining benefits from the earth’s mass to help it stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Such an architectural setting presents
Hyatt Foundation announced that Toyo Ito is the 2013 recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, an annual award which recognizes “a combination of those qualities of talent, vision, and commitment, which has produced consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the art of architecture.” First is a retail project that was cited by the jury, and one of the first projects of Ito’s that I came across as an architecture student. It’s the Tod’s store in Omotesando, which you can see in the photos above. The structure of the project is also the skin: a graphic and concrete abstraction of trees that wraps
In Aarhus, Denmark, a stunning waterfront residential project was recently completed—the white, unusually shaped building looks just like a giant iceberg. A collaboration between JDS Architects, Cebra, SeARCH and Louis Paillard, the project consists of several pointy-roofed blocks with small, geometric windows cut into their sides. Designed to provide as many occupants as possible with waterfront views, the building wasn’t meant to resemble an iceberg initially, but simply came to be so along the way.
Easter is a great holiday, it’s warm, homey and very spring-like. There are many ways to decorate your home for Easter. Easter home decorations are very diverse and can serve in seasonal and everyday decor after the holiday is over. For instance, cute bright tableware and floral table centerpieces are just right for spring seasonal home decor but can also add to the Easter feel.
Modern houses often feature a design that integrates a swimming pool into the house structure thus not only saving space on the sight but also creating a connection between indoors and outdoors. The connection between the house and swimming pool makes for an interesting exterior.
Photographer Tom Hussey has created a thought-provoking ad campaign for Novartis’ Exelon Patch, which is a prescriptive medicine for the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s dementia. In his poignant photo series, Hussey depicts old people who see reflections of their younger selves in mirrors in order to reflect the confusion that plagues Alzheimer’s patients on a daily basis. These award-winning pictures poetically illustrate the receding memories of people who suffer from dementia, who often start losing their newer memories first and are left with older ones of their youth.
Cuban-American artist Cesar Santos has created a series of paintings that imagines what could have happened if all the great artists from across the ages were to collaborate.By mixing the signature styles of legendary masters from the Renaissance to the Modernism movements, he produced intriguing paintings that juxtapose very different artistic elements on top of one another. One of the paintings depicts a trio of cherubs in modern diapers, painting out of Warhol-esque “Campbell” cans. These artworks allow the viewer to appreciate iconic pieces from the likes of Rembrandt and Picasso from a different, fresher perspective. Augusto Esquivel is obsessed with comparisons of reality and potential and the balance between them, in art: the idea of chaos in perfect order: an object seemingly solid to the eye can also be fragile and inconsistent to the touch; a common object used to create a piece of art becomes transformed into something complicated and intriguing. He realized how insignificant and small a simple sewing button can be as it lays in his grandmother’s sewing box, but at the same time how unique and precious it can become as part of a work of art. He has created these Awesome
Saffire Freycinet is luxury resort opened on Tasmania’s East Coast in Australia. Very few resorts manage to get all the ingredients right when opening but we can assure you, this beauty of a hotel has ticked all the right boxes. We were literally left speechless — and that takes some doing — as we feasted our eyes on the breathtaking vistas, indulged our senses in our gorgeous suite and in the spa, and devoured the food that made any thought of a diet ridiculous. A four-hour walk on the pristine beach helped, too. These were the first notes we scribbled just after departing:
We love order and minimalism in buildings. New, freshly planned, pristine and perfect are great attributes for new structures , yet we also find ourselves drawn to things that aren’t so flawless. Recycled, repurposed, previously loved, salvaged. Buildings that have a previous life carry a character that brand-new ones just cannot master. When old structures are preserved and lovingly restored, we gain in so many ways. Not only do we preserve materials that would otherwise end up in the waste stream, we also respect the heritage of each building, and add to the character of the surrounding area. Sadly, restoring
