A blast from the past, fanny packs are back. Traditionally worn across the waist, they are arguably the oldest fashion accessory. Known by different names worldwide, “belt bags” or “waist bags,” people are looking to rewrite this fashion accessory popularized in the 80s.

Fanny packs were developed for fathers that required something more than a wallet but would never dare to carry a purse. Years later, they have evolved into a useful fashion statement made popular by renowned director Spike Lee, who has worn them for decades and consistently manages to make them fashionable. Later, young stars like Rihanna and Kendall Jenner embraced the accessory.

And though these fashion icons style them effortlessly, it can be challenging to style them on your own. Here are a few ways to style them and have heads turning—in a good way.

How to Style Fanny Packs - men, fashion, fanny pack

Casual outfit

The traditional FP falls under casual clothing because it is frequently paired with crop tops, loungewear sets, and jeans. Obviously, a chic fanny pack outfit does not exist. A waist-belt bag cannot be worn with a full-length ball gown or tuxedo suit.

They are certainly appropriate for brunch locations, park strolls, and casual dates. Fanny packs are made to be worn year-round, just like most purses, so you can carry one from winter to summer.

Over your sweater

Let’s be honest; wearing your fanny pack over a sweater runs the risk of aging you. When you wear a bulky knitted sweater, wearing a fanny pack across your waist will weigh your outfit down. Therefore, we recommend wearing it across your chest, drawing it just below your breast. This will not only draw attention to the fanny’s back but to your sweater as well.

With a dress

Wearing a fanny pack across the waist of a fitted dress gives off a 90s vibe—an aesthetic that is both retro and chic.  If it’s a mini, pairing this whole ensemble with thigh-high boots and a high pony will look stunning on you. If the dress is a maxi, a pair of white sneakers will do just fine, especially if the dress is a solid color. If floral, we recommend a solid-colored fanny.

Over your blazer

Are you going for a business casual look? Wear a blazer over your t-shirt and jeans, and finish off the look with a fanny pack draped across your chest. This look would also look great for an all-official look; the fanny being draped over a suit. But instead of wearing a button-down shirt, we recommend wearing a fitted shirt underneath for a fun and official look.

Streetwear

As a rule of thumb, drape your fanny pack across your chest if your outfit is oversized. This gives off a well-put-together look, giving your outfit some form of symmetry, and drawing attention to your outfit as a whole.

Finally

Hopefully, you’ve made progress in learning how to properly wear a fanny pack. There are many different styles to pick from, including high-waisted denim and biker shorts.
